Our number one resource is
our quality of life. South Big Horn County is a safe, friendly, affordable
place to live. There is more public land in the county than private land. Every
US citizen is already a landowner in Big Horn County! Every US citizen owns
thousands of acres here on which he can do just about anything legal except
build. South Big Horn County is perfect for people who are tired of population
pressure, traffic, high crime rates, and the frenetic pace of city life.
Cost of living is below the
state average and below the national average. There
is no state income tax. You can buy a decent house for $60,000 and a really
nice one for $100,000. For $150,000 you can get a house in the country with a
few acres.
The communities of Greybull, Basin and Burlington each have fine primary, middle and high schools. Northwest Community College, a 2-year accredited college is in Powell, within a 45-minute commute. 98% of our students graduate from high school, and 28% go to college.
Excellent hunting (moose,
elk, antelope, deer, rabbit, turkey, duck, geese) in our Big Horn Mountains bring hunters from all over the
world. Fishing is great in the mountain streams. Swimming, biking, tennis,
baseball, softball, volleyball, and hiking are just a few of the outdoor
attractions. Basin has a great 9-hole golf course, one of the best anywhere.
We have high speed internet
access, thanks to TCT West, our local telephone company. We have our own POP
(point of presence), with redundancy, diversity, and a self-healing ring. Our
Broadband internet connections are as good as any to be found anywhere. Basin
and Greybull each have a weekly newspaper, and daily newspaper delivery is
available from both Casper, Wyoming and Billings, Montana.
There are two commercial
airports within a 60-minute commute. Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad
provides daily freight service to Basin and Greybull. We have major two-lane
highways throughout the county, but no interstates.
There is a commute population
of 29,000 people, drawing partly from Worland, a larger town just south of Big
Horn County.
Culture shock for teenagers -
we have no malls, no Kmart, Walmart or other big box stores! Instead, we have
lots of friendly little stores that sell almost everything at competitive
prices and Pamida, our new everything store and well supplied pharmacy.
